The Canvas of the Mind: A Journey Through Anxiety
Life, a confluence of experiences and journeys that paint the vast canvas of the mind. Each brushstroke marked by hues of happiness, gloom, passion, and fear, wherein the particularly darker shades often illustrate the tale of a condition we know as 'Anxiety’.
The story I offer is not borrowed from textbooks or drafted in jargon. It is a real-life narrative marked by personal experiences and the struggle to master them.
My first brush with anxiety wasn't something I realized at the moment. It was a gradual realization, like slowly waking up to notice that somehow, you've drifted to the middle of a vast, volatile sea, the shores of 'normal' far away. Just like how one cannot quantify exactly at which moment the day fades into night, I was knee-deep in worry before I realized that my mental state was anything but okay.
From 'why can't I sleep?' to 'why can't I step out of my house?', the questions soon painted a picture that looked uncannily like anxiety.
Recognizing The Beast: Symptoms of Anxiety
Constant worry, a heavy chest, rapid heartbeat, knots in the stomach, trembling hands. Sounds commonplace, right? Except when they're not. These routine discomforts often mask themselves as ordinary stress, fatigue, or just another bad day. However, the continuous presence of these signs should be addressed. Don't let the commonplace guise of these symptoms fool you into neglecting your mental health.
Me and My Anxiety: The Painted Picture
Knowing that you're under the spell of anxiety might be a relief, finally assigning a name to the faceless beast that had been haunting you. The journey, however, doesn't end there.
I, too, had a similar revelation. Yet, the path thereafter wasn't an easy one to tread. Battling anxiety often feels like a tug-of-war game against your own self.
The Colors of Coping: Dealing with Anxiety
Facing the beast of anxiety is no small feat. Yet it is a battle that can indeed be won. My journey towards reclaiming my peace involved various coping mechanisms. Therapy, medication, mindfulness exercises, journaling — I tried them all. Each person's coping mechanism can differ, but the key lies in persistence and a strong will to paint brighter strokes in the canvas of your mind.
Lessons Learnt: My Message to You
Never let judgment, embarrassment, or the fear of being judged by others, stop you from seeking help. It's okay to admit when things get tough. It's okay to show vulnerability. It's okay not to be okay.
Your mind is your canvas, free to paint as you will — be it with strokes of happy yellow or anxious grey. Embrace it, for its existence is as real as the person living it.
